That's understandable — U.S. 74 and the Monroe Expressway connect the two — but it misses most of what Monroe is. Monroe is its own incorporated city, with its own council, departments and history, and it has been the seat of Union County since the county was formed in the 1840s.
The courthouse square is still the center of the city's identity. The present courthouse, a late-Victorian building of 1886 with wings added in 1922, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and the blocks around it form the Monroe Downtown Historic District. Brick commercial buildings hold local restaurants and shops; county and city offices bring a steady weekday rhythm.
Beyond downtown, the city's residential streets record many decades of growth: older houses with porches and tall windows, mid-century brick ranches under mature trees, later subdivisions, and newer construction toward the edges. Farther out, Union County still has rural roads and acreage — some of it with a Monroe mailing address, much of it outside city limits.
That last point matters more than any other. A Monroe address doesn't settle whether a parcel is in the city, which utilities serve it, who handles zoning and permits, or which schools are assigned. Land varies just as much: soils, access, easements and recorded restrictions decide what a lot can become, not its size.
Monroe Living is a guide to all of it — downtown and its history, housing of every era, land and construction research, renovation and design, and the practical questions of tolls, airports and nearby towns. We cite official sources, label what we haven't verified, and don't invent listings, events or prices.
